Mangroves are coastal superheroes—they protect shorelines from erosion, support marine life, store carbon, and act as natural buffers against storms.

In Guinea-Bissau, however, mangroves faced severe degradation due to unsustainable practices and environmental challenges. The loss of these vital ecosystems threatened biodiversity, community livelihoods, and climate resilience.

Recognizing the urgent need for action, Wetlands International launched a transformative project to restore mangroves and empower local communities, applying their Community-Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration (CBEMR) approach.

Beyond Borders Media was honored to document this critical work, telling the story of challenges and solutions.

Our task was to capture the essence of Wetlands International’s work in Guinea-Bissau through multimedia storytelling. The goal was to create content that could educate diverse audiences, from industry professionals to local communities, and inspire action for mangrove restoration. We visited multiple villages, documenting the restoration process and the profound impact it had on people and nature.

We produced a series of short videos, including a cinematic piece narrated by the mangrove itself, showcasing its importance and struggles, and another highlighting the role of national parks and local collaboration in mangrove conservation.

We also documented the empowerment of women through restoration-driven livelihoods and delved into the CBEMR approach, illustrating its sustainability through community engagement and ecological expertise.

These short videos aimed to inform and inspire viewers by blending education with captivating visuals.

In addition to the shorter pieces, we produced a longer documentary that wove together all these themes, offering a comprehensive narrative of the restoration project.

This film was designed to provide a deep dive into the work being done, showing the interconnectedness of nature, community, and innovation in preserving mangroves.

Our work also extended beyond video. Complementary to the videos, we crafted four written stories that detailed different facets of the restoration effort.

One article explored how monitoring and evaluation played a crucial role in the project’s success. Another celebrated the grassroots movement driving mangrove restoration across Guinea-Bissau. 

We also documented the innovative methods used to revive mangroves in abandoned rice fields and highlighted the role of PLANTA, the national mangrove platform, in coordinating restoration efforts.

Complementing these narratives, we created a collection of 120 high-quality photographs, capturing the stunning landscapes of the mangroves, the restoration techniques in action, and the vibrant communities who rely on these ecosystems. These images have become a cornerstone of Wetlands International’s advocacy and education efforts.

The multimedia content we created was showcased at the International Mangrove Conservation and Restoration Conference in December 2024 in Abu Dhabi, receiving widespread acclaim.

The success of the videos led to additional requests for French and Creole versions to reach even broader audiences.

The videos, articles, and photos now serve as powerful tools for advocacy and education, amplifying Wetlands International’s message and inspiring action globally.

This collaboration has not only highlighted the challenges and triumphs of mangrove restoration but also reinforced the critical role of storytelling in driving environmental change.
