UNESCO – Promoting Disability Equality in Media
Fact corner

UNESCO launched a groundbreaking Masterclass series focused on Disability and Equality in the media, a powerful initiative born out of the urgent need to foster inclusion, accessibility, and fair representation in an often exclusive landscape.
Given the media’s influence on shaping public perceptions, it is essential that disability-related topics are integrated into coverage and that platforms align with international accessibility standards.
Too often, stories of persons with disabilities are either ignored or misrepresented – this series aims to change that.
To bring this vision to life, UNESCO entrusted Beyond Borders Media (BBM) with the production of ten disability-inclusive video clips in British English, forming the backbone of this transformative initiative.

BBM produced a series of videos to support the adaptation of UNESCO’s Practical Guide for Promoting Disability Equality in Media, aiming to build capacity within media organisations and professionals to create more inclusive and accessible content.
The project included a teaser video and nine educational clips, each addressing key aspects of disability representation, media accessibility, and inclusive management practices.

The videos covered essential topics such as eliminating stigma and discrimination in media narratives and ensuring accessibility across video, radio, print, and online content.
BBM’s comprehensive approach encompassed scripting, visual animation, voice-over recording, audio transcription, ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation, closed captions, and final exports optimised for various platforms. Every detail was carefully designed to align with international web and audio-visual accessibility standards.
This wasn’t just a production for us; it was a cause we hold close to our hearts. This level of care was not only technical – it was ethical. We were honoured to invest our time, creativity, and knowledge into a project that champions human dignity and equality!

A central component of this project was the inclusion of a presenter on screen, complemented by visual aids and an ASL interpreter.
Recognising that media professionals are the primary audience, BBM ensured that the communication style remained highly engaging and visually compelling.
To achieve this, the team meticulously scripted each video before casting a suitable presenter with on-camera experience.
Sophie Morgan, journalist and disability rights advocate, was selected to lead the series. Known for her work as a television presenter and longtime host of the Paralympic Games, Sophie has used her platform to challenge perceptions of disability and advocate for greater representation in media.
Her presence brought authenticity, courage, and advocacy to the forefront of this campaign – her voice resonated with the purpose behind every frame we created.

The importance of this initiative cannot be overstated. An estimated 1.3 billion people worldwide – approximately 16% of the global population – live with disabilities.
Despite this significant demographic, disability remains underrepresented in media coverage, operations, and management.
Many existing narratives either portray disability as something to be pitied or as a source of inspiration, often overlooking the lived experiences and challenges faced by persons with disabilities.
At Beyond Borders Media, we believe the media has the power to shift mindsets and catalyse real change!
This series stands as a call to action: for more authentic storytelling, greater inclusion, and ultimately, the dismantling of long-standing biases.

UNESCO’s Masterclass series is now accessible to media professionals worldwide, providing them with practical guidance on disability-inclusive reporting and management.
It’s more than a toolkit – it’s a bold statement that equal representation matters.
By amplifying diverse voices and advocating for systemic change, this project represents a major step forward in making the media landscape more inclusive.
